Melrose Park Corporate Center
Melrose Park, Illinois

The project requirement
Demolition of a two story masonry and concrete office building, and 130,000 square feet of adjacent warehouse. We had the removal of all slabs and foundations complete, including on site crushing of all the concrete and masonry into CA6 and 4 stone for use in the new construction. The time frame for the project was tight because the contractor needed to get substantial completion for the new warehouse before winter.

The Break Thru Solution
Break Thru used four different pieces of heavy equipment; three of the excavators were in the 80,000 pound class and several skid-steer loaders to accomplish this task. We also had a crew of burners cutting the structural steel. Before the building was completely down we had already started on the slabs and foundations because all that material had to be crushed on site. We hired a sub contractor to bring in two portable crushers to process the concrete into stone. We ended up crushing 12,000 tons of concrete and masonry that was reused on the site by the concrete contractor. Concrete was not hauled off site nor was stone brought in to construct the new building; enough concrete was recycled on site for the other trades to use to construct the new building. Break Thru recycled 85% of all the materials on this demolition project.
