Break Thru was contracted to create numerous structural floor openings, demo and remove 2 old freight elevators and shafts dating back to the early 1900s, complete stair structures, fire escape, and demo elevator penthouse and roof structure of the 14-story building. Close coordination with the steel contractor and structural engineer was required in order to successfully remove the elevator penthouse and roof structure of the building. This project was completed on time and without incident.
Challenges and Fun Facts:
- The new structural floor openings were created through an old clay arch tile floor system.
- The perimeter walls of the top floors were shored up to prevent them from being undermined while removing the structural components of the roof.
- Due to the floor structure type, shoring/catch decks were provided for each opening.
- All our skid-steers have clean Tier-4 engines. This maintained clean air for crews and building occupants working inside the building. Tier-4 engines also eliminates the lingering smell of diesel exhaust fumes during operation and after work was complete.
