Big Building Demolition
Break Thru was contracted to demolish and remove roughly 200,000 square feet of retail build out that use to occupy the entire building. Outside of clearing out the standard finishes, our crews removed elevators, stacked escalators, stairs, old boilers, and HVAC fan units. The end goal for this project was to clear the way for our client to convert this abandoned Chicago retail space into a new mixed use property with residential units and retail. Good thing big building demolition is our specialty.
Challenges & Fun Facts
- This building was originally built in 1938. This lead to uncovering unique building practices from a past era Chicago that needed to be accounted for while dismantling elements of the building.
- Disposal of yesteryears oversized mechanical equipment from the basement and penthouse posed a challenge. Equipment from the early 20th century tended to be installed first and then the building was built around it. This left no easy means haul it to the first floor and required thinking out of the box.
- All our skid-steers have clean Tier-4 engines. This maintained clean air for crews and building occupants working inside the building. Tier-4 engines also eliminates the lingering smell of diesel exhaust fumes during operation and after work was complete.
