Break Thru was contracted to separate a 90,000 square foot building into two buildings. 10,500 square feet was to be left to be active and occupied throughout demolition. The 2-story portion of the building to be demolished was a cast in place concrete structure with a deep basement built in the 1950s. The basement was filled and leveled with crushed concrete from the removed structure.
Challenges and Fun Facts:
- The portion of the building to remain was 100% occupied and active throughout demolition.
- High level trade coordination was required for the separation of the buildings; this consisted of engineering of the structure to remain ensuring the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, communications systems remained active, as well as engineered shoring systems and saw cutting for separation prior to demolition.
- Over 6,000 tons of concrete were recycled.
- Over 150 tons of steel were recycled.
